Operational Units

The Sheriff's Office is a 24-hour operation staffed by some of the best and most well-trained officers and civilians working in the field of law enforcement today. Below you will find links to each of the Office's various Divisions and Units. Take a look to find out how the men and women of the Bergen County Sheriff's Office are working hard for you.
The Court Security Unit’s primary mission is to ensure the orderly operations of the Bergen County Justice Center as well of the safety of its judges, staff and the more than 1 million visitors who pass through its doors every year.

In addition, the Unit is tasked with providing security and maintaining order at the judiciary’s Probation Department located at 133 River Street and Child Support Unit located at 101-103 Hudson Street, both in Hackensack, New Jersey. To accomplish this, the Court Security Unit utilizes a mix of traditional methods, such as magnetometers and x-ray equipment, aimed at detecting potentially dangerous items before they make their way into the facility as well as various state-of-the-art technologies designed to monitor every square inch of the facility for signs of possible trouble.
With six separate facilities spread out around Bergen County whose security is entrusted to the BCSO’s care, the Sheriff’s Homeland Unit plays an essential function.

The Sheriff’s Homeland Unit is responsible for ensuring perimeter security at the Bergen County Jail and Bureau of Criminal Investigation building as well as the D1 Secure Medical Unit at Bergen Regional Medical Center.
The Sheriff’s Office maintains several K-9 teams to assist the BCSO and law enforcement agencies throughout the state in a broad range of tasks and situations. Each K-9 team consists of an officer and a canine ‘partner’ that has been specially trained in a specific skill.

Canine skills include explosives, narcotics, criminal apprehension, evidence search, tracking, tobacco detection, cell phone detection, cadaver location and recovery. The teams are utilized to prevent the introduction of contraband into the Bergen County Jail, conduct searches for potentially dangerous devices in the Justice Center and other ancillary properties, assist the Sheriff’s Patrol Unit in the discovery of evidence and apprehension of suspects, as well as handle missing person searches.

While the tools available to law enforcement grow increasingly sophisticated, K-9 officers and their partners remain one of the most effective resources the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office has at its disposal.
The Operations Unit serves as the "nerve center" of the Bergen County Sheriff's Office and is responsible for the coordination of most departmental activities. Its primary duties include responding to all radio, telephonic and data resources and managing telecommunications for the Sheriff's Office and the Bergen County Probation Department. The Operations Unit also serves as a hub for records management.

The Operations Unit is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  It also provides translation services, consisting of more than 100 languages to any law enforcement agency, through the AT&T language line.
The Bergen County Jail holds more than 9,000 inmates during the course of a given year. Typically, each of those inmates will have numerous scheduled court appearances for arraignments, bail hearings and trial.

It is the mission of the Prisoner Transportation Unit to help coordinate these appearances, as well as safely and securely transport inmates between the Jail and the Bergen County Justice Center.
The Special Operations Group serves as the Sheriff's high-risk operations team, which is responsible for all high-risk preplanned operations requiring heavy weapons and threat assessments. Unit members may be activated to conduct high-risk prisoner transports, warrant services or to neutralize an active shooter at the Justice Complex or other location.

All members of the Special Operations Group are professionally trained and have attended either the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s S.W.A.T. School or the National Tactical Officers Association S.W.A.T. School.
