New Jersey’s Department of Law and Public Safety protects and enhances the safety and interests of every citizen of New Jersey through an integrated system of law enforcement and regulatory services; advocates for the public in matters where the rights and interests of the public are at issue; and represents the interests of the state and its agencies in all legal matters. With ten divisions as well as independent commissions and boards, the department has wide-ranging responsibilities.
The department performs such critical tasks as overseeing the criminal justice system, defending the state against lawsuits and protecting the rights and safety of the public.
The department also regulates the casino, boxing, alcoholic beverage and racing industries. As head of the department, the Attorney General serves as the state’s chief law enforcement officer and legal advisor, and is responsible for the management and administration of the department.
