Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Receives Re-Accreditation from New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police

Hackensack, NJ-   The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office today was unanimously granted re-accreditation from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) through its New Jersey Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (NJLEAC).  

“I want to congratulate the men and women of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office on this great accomplishment, and in particular, the Accreditation Unit in preparing for this assessment,” Sheriff Michael Saudino said.  “Accreditation ensures that we, as an organization, are adhering to the highest standards of professionalism and public service.”

Prior to today’s event, an assessment team visited the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for a two-day on-site assessment back on October 27th and 28th. The assessment team subsequently recommended accreditation to the commission at the culmination of that assessment.

According to the NJLEAC, the accreditation process requires an in-depth review of every aspect of the agency's organization, management, operations and administration. To achieve accreditation, the agency is required to comply with best practice standards in four areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.  In the report, the NJSACOP noted the Office’s “well organized” internal affairs function, as well as the “robust field training officer program” run by the Training Unit.  

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office was also accredited back in 2010.  Accreditation is awarded for three years; at the expiration of this time period, an agency must go through the entire process again to maintain re-accredited status.  During those three years, proofs of compliance must be upheld as directed from the NJLEAC.  

“It goes to show that the policies and procedures we have implemented here have followed the core functions of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Saudino.  

The Bergen County Sheriff's Office is the largest law enforcement agency in Bergen County and provides a variety of public safety functions for each of the county’s more than 900,000 residents.  Comprised of more than 500 dedicated personnel, the Office's responsibilities include a broad range of services that assist the public, augment the county's municipal police departments and safeguard Bergen County’s judicial proceedings.
